Россия - Родина моя

Когда иду я Подмосковьем,
Kogda idu ya Podmaskovem,
Где пахнет мятою трава,
Gze pakhnhiot miatoiu trava,
Природа шепчет мне с любовью
Priroda sepchiot mnhe s liuboviu
Свои заветные слова.
Sva-i zavetnuie slava.
Вдали рассветная полоска
Vdali rassvetnaia paloska
Осенним пламенем горит.
Osenhim plamenhem gorit.
Моя знакомая березка
Maya znakomaya berioza
Мне тихо, тихо говорит.
Mnhe chikho,chikho govarit.

Россия, Россия,
Rassia,Rassia,
Родные, вольные края.
Rodnie,volnuie kraya.
Россия, Россия,
Rassia,Rassia,
Россия - Родина моя!
Rassia-Rodina maya!
Россия, Россия,
Rassia,Rassia,
Россия - Родина моя!
Rassia-Rodina maya!

Когда порой плыву по Волге
Kogda paroi pliuvu po Bolge
И чайка вьется за кормой,
I chaka viotsia za kormoi,
Гляжу, гляжу на берег долго -
Gliazu,glyazu na bereg dolgo-
Не расстается он со мной.
Nhe rasstaiotsia on sa-mnoi.
Машу приветливо рукою,
Masu privietlivo rukoiu,
А берег рядышком идет,
A bereg riaduiskom idiot,
И кто-то поздно над рекою
I kto-to pozdno nad rekuiu
Раздольным голосом поет.
Razdolnuim golosom paiot.

Россия, Россия,
Родные, вольные края.
Россия, Россия,
Россия - Родина моя!
Россия, Россия,
Россия - Родина моя!

Когда меня московский поезд
Kogda menhiya maskovski poezd
Уносит в дальние места,
Unosit v dalnhie mesta,
Хлеба мне кланяются в пояс.
Khleba mnhe klanhyaiutsia v poias.
Мигает ранняя звезда.
Migaet rannhaiya zviozda.
На голос Родины я вышел.
Na golos Rodinui ya vuisel.
Как ты, Россия, хороша!
Kak tui,Rassia,kharasa!
Смотрю вокруг и сердцем слышу -

Поет, поет, моя душа.

Lời của nó thì thế này

http://www.karaoke.ru/song/704.htm

"On June, 22th, exactly at 4:00 at the morning"

It is a popular Soviet WWII-time song.

"On June, 22nd, at 4:00 o'clock sharp at the morning"

(Translated by Andrey)

On June, 22nd
At 4:00 o'clock sharp at the morning
Kiev was bombed, we were informed,
The war has begun

The war began at dawn
For killing more people.
Parents were sleeping, their children were sleeping
When the Germans began to bomb Kiev.

The huge avalanches of enemies were coming
And it was no forces there to hold them,
When they came on the lands of dear Ukraine
They began to kill people.

All Ukrainian people arose
For dear Ukrainian Fatherland.
All men were going into action
Firing their house and plant. [As in original text, not plural, but singular]

Many shells and many mines were exploding,
Many tanks were thundering by an armor,
Red falcons [1] were twirling in the sky
And were rushing in West like arrows.

A severe winter began,
Enemies were close to Moscow,
Many guns were firing, many mines were exploding,
Tearing the Germans in pieces.

The battle for the capital finished
The Germans took to their heels -
They abandoned many tanks, they abandoned many mines
They left some thousands soldiers.

Remember, Hanses and Fritzes [2],
The time will come soon, it will be time
When we beat your lousy nape
And you will remember us.

Remarks of Andrey:
[1] “Red falcons” means “Soviet fighter-planes” here
[2] "Hans" and "Fritz" –are Russian common names of Germans, like Germans called all Russians as "Ivan".

"Dvadtsat' vtorogo iiunia, rovno v chetyre chasa"

Dvadtsat' vtorogo iiunia,
Rovno v chetyre chasa
Kiev bombili, nam ob'iavili,
Chto nachalasia voina.

Voina nachalas' na rassvete,
Chtob bol'she narodu ubit'.
Spali roditeli, spali ikh deti,
Kogda stali Kiev bombit'.

Vragov shli bol'shie laviny,
Ikh ne bylo sil uderzhat',
Kak v zemli vstupili rodnoi Ukrainy,
To stali liudei ubivat'.

Za zemliu rodnoi Bat'kivshchiny
Podnialsia ukrainskii narod.
Na boi ukhodili vse-vse muzhchiny,
Szhigaia svoi dom i zavod.

Rvalisia snariady i miny,
Tanki gremeli bronioi,
Iastreby krasny v nebe kruzhili,
Mchalis' na zapad streloi.

Nachalasia zimniaia stuzha,
Byli vragi u Moskvy,
Pushki palili, miny rvalisia,
Nemtsev terzaia v kuski.

Konchilsia boi za stolitsu,
Brosilis' nemtsy bezhat' -
Brosili tanki, brosili miny,
Neskol'ko tysiach soldat.

Pomnite Gansy i Fritsy -
Skoro nastanet tot chas,
My vam nacheshem vshivyi zatylok,
Budete pomnit' vy nas.

"On the hills of Manchuria"

This sad waltz was made in 1906, after the end of the Russian-Japanese war.

This waltz immediately became very popular and it became even more popular after the beginning of WWI.

It is a very famous song in Russia.

"On the hills of Manchuria"

(Translated by Andrey)

Silence is around,
Hills are covered by darkness,
Here the moon shined for a moment from behind clouds,
Graves are keeping rest.

Crosses show up white,
Heroes are sleeping here.
The shadows of past are whirling around again,
And are speaking about the victims of the combats which were here.

Silence is around,
A wind took away a fog,
Warriors are sleeping on the Manchurian hills
And aren't hear Russian tears.

A darling mother is crying, is crying,
A young wife is crying.
One and all are crying
And are cursing their fate and destiny.

Let kaoliang [1]
Will call up dreams to you,
Soldiers of the Russian land, be asleep,
Sons of the dear Fatherland.

You died for Russia,
You died for the Fatherland,
Believe us, we shall take revenge for you
And will make a glorious funeral feast

And will make a glorious funeral feast

1906

Remarks of Andrey:
[1] "kaoliang" is a Chinese high steppe grass

"Na sopkakh Man'chzhurii"

Tikho vokrug,
Sopki pokryty mgloi,
Vot iz-za tuch blesnula luna,
Mogily khraniat pokoi.

O zhertvakh boiov tverdiat.

Tikho vokrug,

Na sopkakh Man'chzhurskikh voiny spiat,
I russkikh ne slyshat slez.

Plachet, plachet mat' rodnaia,
Plachet molodaia zhena,
Plachut vse, kak odin chelovek,
Svoi rok i sud'bu kliania.

Pust' gaolian
Vam navevaet sny,
Spite geroi russkoi zemli,
Otchizny rodnoi syny.

Vy pali za Rus',
Pogibli za Otchiznu,
Pover'te, my za Vas otomstim
I spravim my slavnuiu triznu.

I spravim my slavnuiu triznu.

"Victory Day"

It is a very famous after-war song. This song is the symbol of that Victory. Every year on May, 9th this song is singed on the TV, the radio and so on.

It is impossible to imagine Victory Day holiday without this song, it is impossible to imagine holiday military parade without this song.

There are the images which are related with this song - a huge holiday salute; happy smiling faces; trains with the soldiers, who are returning at home and who are decorated by flowers; crying women who are meeting and embracing with their husbands, fathers, brothers...

And it is soldier's popular march song. Modern Russian soldiers often sing this song when they are marching.

"Victory Day"

(Translated by Andrey)

Victory Day, what far it was from us sometime!
It was like the small light which wasted away in an extinct bonfire,
We remember long roads, and these roads were charred and dusty, -
We were making everything what was possible for the approaching of this day.

Refrain:
Oh, this Victory Day,
It smells of gunpowder,
It is the holiday
With a grey hair in temples.
It is gladness
With tears in eyes.
Victory Day!
Victory Day!
Victory Day!

For the every night and day our Motherland [1]
Didn't close eyes nearly open-hearth furnaces,
For the every night and day we had harsh battle -
We were making everything, what was possible, for the approaching of this day.

Repeat refrain.

Hello, Mama, not everyone returned...
And I want to run barefoot over the dew on grass.
We went on foot a half of Europe, we went on foots a half of the Earth, -
We were making everything, what was possible, for the approaching of this day.

Repeat refrain.

Remarks of Andrey:
[1] "Motherland" means "our people" here

"Den' Pobedy"

Den' Pobedy, kak on byl ot nas daliok,
Kak v kostre potukhshem taial ugoliok.
Byli viorsty, obgorelye, v pyli, -
Etot den' my priblizhali, kak mogli.

Pripev:
Etot Den' Pobedy
Porokhom propakh,
Eto prazdnik
S sedinoiu na viskakh.
Eto radost'
So slezami na glazakh.
Den' Pobedy!
Den' Pobedy!
Den' Pobedy!

Dni i nochi u martenovskikh pechei
Ne smykala nasha Rodina ochei,
Dni i nochi bitvu trudnuiu veli -
Etot den' my priblizhali, kak mogli.

Pripev.

Zdravstvui, mama, vozvratilis' my ne vse...
Bosikom by probezhat'sia po rose!
Pol-Evropy, proshagali, pol-Zemli, -
Etot den' my priblizhali, kak mogli.

Pripev.

"March of Soviet tankmen"

It is a very good popular pre-war song.

I like very much music and words.

"March of Soviet tankmen"

(Translated by Andrey)

The armor [of our tanks] is firm and our tanks are fast
And our men have much courage
Soviet tankmen are ready for action -
Sons of their Great Motherland.

Refrain:
Thundering by a fire, sparkling with some glint of steel,
The tanks will begin a harsh campaign
When Comrade Stalin will send us in a battle
And Voroshilov [1] will lead us in this battle!

We are able to protect the labor of plants and the labor of tillages,
We are able to defend our country
With the shock force of our gun turrets,
With the quickness and with the rush of a fire.

Repeat refrain.

Let enemy, who is making an ambush, will remember
That we are on an alert, we are watching for an enemy.
We want not a single inch of an alien land
But we shall not give away even vershok [2] of our territory.

Repeat refrain.

And if a hardened enemy will climb up at us
He will be beaten always and everywhere!
In this case our tank drivers will press starters
And the tanks will go across forests, hills, water...

End of 30th years

Repeat refrain.

Remarks of Andrey:
[1] Marshal Voroshilov was the People Commissar (Minister) of the Defense of USSR in the end of 30th years.
[2] “vershok” is ancient Russian measure of length, 1 vershok is equal to 1.75 inches

"Marsh Sovetskikh tankistov"

Bronia krepka, i tanki nashi bystry,
I nashi liudi muzhestva polny:
V stroiu stoiat sovetskie tankisty -
Svoei velikoi Rodiny syny.

Pripev:
Gremia ognem, sverkaia bleskom stali,
Poidut mashiny v iarostnyi pokhod,
Kogda nas v boi poshliot tovarishch Stalin,
I Voroshilov v boi nas povedet!

Zavodov trud i trud kolkhoznykh pashen
My zashchitim, stranu svoiu khrania,
Udarnoi siloi orudiinykh bashen
I bystrotoi, i natiskom ognia.

Pripev.

Pust' pomnit vrag, ukryvshiisia v zasade,
My nacheku, my za vragom sledim.
Chuzhoi zemli my ne khotim ni piadi,
No i svoei vershka ne otdadim.

Pripev.

A esli k nam polezet vrag matioryi,
On budet bit povsiudu i vezde!
Togda nazhmut voditeli startiory,
I po lesam, po sopkam, po vode....

Pripev.

Konets 30-kh godov

"My beloved"

It is soldier's Soviet WWII-time song, it was very popular in frontline troops.

"My beloved"

(Translated by Andrey)

I was going in a campaign
In harsh lands in that time
And you stood nearly gate and waved by you hand,
My beloved girl.
And you stood nearly gate and waved by you hand,
My beloved girl.

The brave 2nd Rifle Platoon
Is my family now.
It sends greetings to you,
My beloved girl.

If you want that all my dreams will realized
In marches and in combats,
So smile me from a far away,
My beloved girl.
So smile me from a far away,
My beloved girl.

I carry your photo
In my small pocket
So it means that we are always together with you,
My beloved girl.
So it means that we are always together with you,
My beloved girl.

"Aliosha"

Aliosha is a tender version of the name Alexey.

It is a sad after-war song.

It is about the monument to a Soviet warrior-liberator in Bulgaria. Bulgarians gives the name Aliosha to the soldier which is showed in this monument.

"Aliosha"

(Translated by Andrey)

If there is newly-fallen snow in fields,
Newly-fallen snow, newly-fallen snow
If there is newly-fallen snow in fields,
And if loud heavy showers are noisy,
Aliosha is standing over an mountain,
Aliosha, Aliosha,
Aliosha, a Russian soldier in Bulgaria,
Is standing over an mountain.

And it is bitterly as usually for a heart,
It is bitterly as usually,
And it is bitterly as usually for a heart,
That after a leaden blizzard [1]
His soldier's blouse is made from stone,
His soldier's blouse,
His soldier's blouse is made from stone
And his boots are made from stone also.

A great deal of unknown guys lay under this load,
Under this load,
A great deal of unknown guys lay under this load,
Under this load,
But fact that this one is Aliosha,
Aliosha, Alyosha,
But fact that this one is Aliosha
Is known to all Bulgaria.

He will never go down from a height
To valleys which are filled by rest,
Are filled by rest,
To valleys which are filled by rest.
He doesn't give flowers to girls,
To girls, to girls,
He doesn't give flowers to girls,
They give flowers him...

If there is newly-fallen snow in fields,
Newly-fallen snow, newly-fallen snow
If there is newly-fallen snow in fields,
And if loud heavy showers are noisy,
Aliosha is standing over an mountain,
Aliosha, Aliosha,
Aliosha, a Russian soldier in Bulgaria,
Is standing over an mountain.

Remarks of Andrey:
[1] "leaden blizzard" means "the flow of many flying leaden bullets" here.

"Aliosha"

Waltz " The Amur's waves"

It is a well-known great Russian waltz, it is an excellent music.

The Amur is the river in the Russian Far East, on the border with China. The waltz was made in 1903-1905 during the Russian-Japanese war.

"The Amur's waves"

(Translated by Andrey)

The Amur carries fluently its waves,
And a Siberian wind sings songs for them.
Taiga makes a noise quietly over the Amur,
Dross wave is going, the dross wave is splashing,
It is stately and free.

A sailor sings a song in the Amur,
In the place where the crimson sun rises.
The song flies over the wide river,
The song is spreading widely, the song is spreading widely,
And it is heard far away.

Waves of the Amur are nice; they are full of beauty and force,
The waves are glistening like silver, the waves are glistening like silver,
They are proud by the Russian glory.
The waves, which are full of force, are splashing, are splashing and are rushing to a sea,
The waves are glistening like silver, the waves are glistening like silver,
They are proud by the glory of the Motherland.

A wave of the Amur is nice; there is the impression of much freedom in the view of the wave.
The wave knows that we protect its rest.
The banks of the river are calm, there is the gold taiga on them,
The wave is breathing by its wonderful beauty.

The grey-haired Amur is stately, we protect its rest.
Ships are moving ahead, waves are running and running.
The grey-haired Amur is stately, we protect its rest.
Ships are moving ahead, waves are running and running.

...

The wind sings songs.
The taiga makes a noise quietly over the Amur
Dross wave is going, the dross wave is splashing,
It is stately and free.

1903-1905

"Amurskie volny"

Plavno Amur svoi volny nesiot,

Serebriatsia volny, serebriatsia volny,

"Ballade about soldier"

It is a very good after-war song about Soviet soldiers of WWII.

"Ballade about soldier"

(Translated by Andrey)

A soldier was going
Through a field, along the steep bank of a river,
By peasant’s houses;
He was dressed in the grey greatcoat of a private.
The soldier went, surmounting all obstacles;
The soldier went, losing his friends.
And it was often
That he went without a halt;
But the soldier went forward.

He went at the stormy nights,
He went during a rain and a hail.
The soldier singed a song
Together with his combat friends.
The soldier was singing, swallowing tears;
He was singing about Russian birches,
About his beloved girl’s hazel eyes,
About the paternal home.
The soldier singed on a way.

It looked like his sub-machine gun
Adhered to his shoulder.
The soldier fought and won
Damned enemies everywhere.
The soldier fought and won them nearly Smolensk,
The soldier fought and won them nearly the settlement N. [1]
The soldier fought and won enemies,
Not counting the amount of the bullets which he shot.
The soldier fought and won enemies without rest.

The soldier was going
Through a field, along the steep bank of a river,
By peasant’s houses,
He was dressed in the grey greatcoat of a private.
The soldier went because he was a servant of the Fatherland.
The soldier went in the name of a life.
He went, saving the World,
Protecting the peace.
The soldier went forward!

He went, saving the World,
Protecting the peace.
The soldier went forward!

Remarks of Andrey:
[1] “N.” – The military censorship often removed real names of settlements, units, soldiers and officers by name “N” during the war. So, for an example, it was possible to hear on radio the following message: “The glorious soldiers of Colonel N’s N-th Guards Division liberated the village Olkhovatka. Sergeant N. personally shot 25 Fascists.”

"Two Maxims"

It is soldiers' Soviet WWII-time song.

Some remarks.

"Maxim" is
1. man's Russian name
2. name of the famous heavy machine gun which was main heavy machine gun of Russian Army in WWI and stayed main machine gun of Red Army up to the second half of Great Patriotic War (GPW).

The heavy machine gun "Maxim" was the version of US "Maxim" machine gun which was modified in Russia, it was produced from 1915. It was a very famous weapon; it is one of the symbols of Civil War and GPW.

"Two Maxims"

(Translated by Andrey)

Birches were noisy on the state border
Where we must to fight now.
And two namesakes served and were friends here,
Both they had name Maxim.

One of them was a sensible machine gunner,
Meet with Maxim.
And the second one was the heavy machine gun
Which had name "Maxim" also.

They were connected closely with old friendship,
They took part in many harsh combats.
Both the namesakes-Maxims,
Were a close inseparable pair.

The machine gunner points the machine gun very exactly,
And the "Maxim" hits enemy like a lightning
"Yes, Yes, Yes," the machine gunner speaks,
"Yes, Yes, Yes," the machine gun speaks also!
"Yes, Yes, Yes," the machine gunner speaks,
"Yes, Yes, Yes," the machine gun speaks also!

They couldn't avoid of the splinters
Of a German grenade.
The machine gunner was wounded, guys,
And the machine gun "Maxim" was damaged.

Maxim is being cured for many days
And his friend was repairing also.
And again both the namesakes-Maxims
Return together in a frontline.

And there is a heavy
Buzzing combat in frontline again.
And the two namesakes serve and are friends again,
And both they have name Maxim.

And again the machine gunner points the machine gun very exactly,
And the "Maxim" hits enemy like a lightning
"Yes, Yes, Yes," the machine gunner speaks,
"Yes, Yes, Yes," the machine gun speaks also!
"Yes, Yes, Yes," the machine gunner speaks,
"Yes, Yes, Yes," the machine gun speaks also!

"Dva Maksima"

Na granitse shumeli beriozki.
Gde teper' prishlos' nam voevat',
Tam sluzhili - druzhili dva tiozki,
I oboikh Maksimami zvat'.

Byl odin pulemiotchik tolkovyi,
Poznakom'tes' s Maksimom moim.
A vtoroi pulemiot byl stankovyi,
Po prozvaniiu tozhe Maksim.

Tesno sviazany druzhboiu staroi,
Prinimali groznye boi
Nerazluchnoiu, druzhnoiu paroi
Oba tiozki - Maksimy moi.

"Fortuitous waltz"

(Translated by Andrey)

It is a very famous Soviet WWII-time melody, Soviet soldiers liked this song.

"Fortuitous waltz"

The night is short,
Clouds are sleeping,
I heard the known melody of the waltz
In the silence of your small town.
I heard melody of waltz
And looked it for an hour or so
Morning is calling me,
I have to march again.
And it is good that I met with you
When I was going by your gate.

Though I am almost not familiar with you
And my home is far away
But I am feeling like I am again
Nearly my dear home.
We are dancing two together
In this large hall,
So say at least a word
About any theme.

Though I am almost not familiar with you
And my home is far away
But I am feeling like I am again
Nearly my dear home.
We are dancing two together
In this large hall,
So say at least a word
About any theme.

"The swarthy girl"

(translated by Andrey)

It is a famous song. I heard her in the after-war movie "V boi idut odni stariki" ("Only hardened pilots will fly this mission") about the group of the Soviet fighter-pilots in 1944. This song was singed during an air combat. Especially a good effect was when a Soviet fighter assaulted a column of the German ground troops under the sound of this song.

"The swarthy girl"

Once at the summer, at the dawn, I looked in a neighboring garden and saw that
A swarthy girl, a Moldavian girl, is gathering vine there.
I am blushing, I am turning white and I want to say
"Let's meet the summer dawns on the bank of a river!"

Refrain:
A green maple is bushy, its leafs are carved,
I am in love and I am embarrassed before you.
The maple is green, the maple is bushy,
Very bushy, carved!

And the swarthy girl, a Moldavian girl, answered to guy:
"We are gathering our Moldavian partisan detachment.
Now partisans left dear home early.
A way to partisans in a thick forest waits you!"

Repeat refrain.

And the swarthy girl, a Moldavian girl, went in a forest on a small path
And I decided that it is a pity that she didn't call me with her.
I often thought about the swarthy girl, a Moldavian girl, at the nights
And suddenly I met her in a partisan detachment!

Repeat refrain.

1940 (was singed only in 1943 and later)

"Smuglianka"

Kak-to letom, na rassvete, zaglianul v sosednii sad.
Tam smuglianka-moldavanka sobiraet vinograd.
Ia krasneiu, ia bledneiu, zakhotelos' vdrug skazat':
"Stanem nad rekoiu zor'ki letnie vstrechat'!"

Pripev:
Raskudriavyi, klion zelionyi, list reznoi,
Ia vliublennyi i smushchionnyi pred toboi.
Klion zelionyi, da klion kudriavyi,
Da raskudriavyi, reznoi!

A smuglianka-moldavanka otvechala parniu v lad:
"Partizanskii moldavanskii sobiraem my otriad.
Nynche rano partizany dom pokinuli rodnoi.
Zhdiot tebia doroga k partizanam v les gustoi!"

Pripev.

I smuglianka-moldavanka po tropinke v les ushla.
V tom obidu ia uvidel, chto s soboi ne pozvala.
O smuglianke-moldavanke chasto dumal po nocham.
Vdrug svoiu smuglianku ia v otriade povstrechal!

Pripev.

“Adzhimushkai ”

It is the after-war song about the feat of Soviet soldiers in Adzhimushkai during WWII.

It is not a very famous song but it is a great song.

Some history.

Adzhimushkai is a very famous place in Russia (it is on the territory of the Crimea now so it is on the Ukraine)

USSR had the two places which can be called “Russian Alamo” of WWII.

The first of all, it is the Brest Fortress which is the most famous “Russian Alamo”.

Adzhimushkai is the second “Russian Alamo”.

Adzhimushkai is a small settlement nearly Kerch’ in the Crimea. There are old deserted quarries here with the long system of caves.

In May of 1942 the Soviet troops in the region of Kerch’ (the Eastern Crimea) were defeated. It was a disaster. 240,000 Soviet soldiers were captured by the Germans as POWs. But 10-15 thousand soldiers didn’t surrender but retreated in the caves nearly Adzhimushkai and continued to fight against the Germans from these old deserted quarries. They had no hope to survive, they practically had no any water and any food (they have to capture it in combats and raids) but they continued to make the active actions against the Germans. The Germans had to leave there some combat units for the actions against the Soviet soldiers. The Germans used some explosive against the Soviet soldiers there. The Germans even used some poison gas against the Soviet soldiers in Adzhimushkai. Only in October of 1942 the Germans could eliminate the last points of resistance there. The soldiers of Adzhimushkai fought to death but didn’t surrender, practically nobody from them survived (as I know).

“Adzhimushkai”

(Translated by Andrey)

As a result of cannonades,
As a result of cannonades,
Kerch’ was burning far off.
The columns of soldiers,
The columns of soldiers,
Went to the quarries.

- Stand firm!
Do not retreat!
Stand firm!
You are not beaten,
Adzhimushkai,
The underground garrison.

Adzhimushkai,

- Stand firm!
Do not retreat!
Stand firm!
You are not beaten,
Adzhimushkai,
Underground garrison.

A landslip happened again,
A landslip happened again,
And darkness is around.
And only whisper is heard,
And only whisper is heard,
It is the whisper of a falling politruk [1]:

"Stand firm!
Do not retreat!
Stand firm!
You are not beaten,"
Adzhimushkai,
The underground garrison.

Adzhimushkai.

"Stand firm!
Do not retreat!
Stand firm!
You are not beaten,"
Adzhimushkai,
The underground garrison.

And there is no any water,
And there is no any water,
And there is no any bread also.
And only the ray of hope lives
Inside of a chest [2],
It lives inside of a chest:

"Stand firm!
Do not retreat!
Stand firm!
You are not beaten."
Adzhimushkai,
The underground garrison.

Adzhimushkai,

"Stand firm!
Do not retreat!
Stand firm!
You are not beaten."
Adzhimushkai,
The underground garrison.

The boom of cannonades,
The boom of cannonades
Is becoming a history.
And only some words
Are still audible from a far away.
They are still audible from a far away:

"Stand firm!
Do not retreat!
Stand firm!
You are not beaten."
Adzhimushkai,
Adzhimushkai,

"Stand firm!
Stand firm!
Do not retreat!
Do not retreat!
Stand firm!
Stand firm!
You are not beaten,
You are not beaten."
Adzhimushkai,
The underground garrison.

Remarks of Andrey:
[1] politruk - a political officer's (commissar's) rank which is equal to the rank "Senior Lieutenant"
[2] it means "in heart" here

“If it was not the War..."

It is a song from after-war the movie “The order is “Do not open fire” (It is about the soldiers who were in the Far East during WWII and protected the country from possible Japanese invasion).

“If it was not the War..."

(Translated by Andrey with the cooperation of Amvas)

Our separation was determined still before our meeting.
And nevertheless I dream about you.
But how could we live without each other,
My dear, if it was not the war.
My dear, if it was not the war.

Probably, I became old too early
But there is no my blame in it.
What a nice pair we would make
My dear, if it was not the war.
My dear, if it was not the war.

And again you is holding out hands to me
You call me from the land from where there is no way back
Our grand-children would go to school
My dear…
If it was not the war...

Nobody knocks at the gate
And I became deaf from this silence
You'd be elder and I – younger,
My dear, if it was not the war.
My dear, if it was not the war.

But how could we live without each other,
My dear, if it was not the war.

"What is the Motherland starting with"

It is the very good famous after-war song from the mini TV-series "Shchit i mech" ("A shield and a sword"). This movie was about an agent of the Soviet intelligence in Third Reich during WWII.

(Translated by Andrey)

"What is the Motherland starting with"

What is the Motherland starting with?
It is starting with a picture in your ABC-book,
And with the some good faithful comrades
Who lives in the next courtyard.
But, may be, it is starting
With the song which was singed us by mother,
And with the thing which nobody is able to take away from us
In any ordeals.

What is the Motherland starting with?
It is starting with the dear bench near gate,
And with the birch which, inclining under a wind,
Grows in the field.
But, may be, it is starting
With the spring song of a starling
And with the country road
Which has no a visible end.

What is the Motherland starting with?
It is starting with windows which shine far away,
And with the father's old budionnovka [1]
Which we found somewhere in the cupboard.
But, may be, it is starting
With the knock of carriage wheels
And with the oath which was taken by you
In your heart in the time of your youth.

What is the Motherland starting with?

Remarks of Andrey:
[1] budionnovka is the Soviet military cap which was used firstly in Red troops of Budionnyi during the Civil War; it was replaced with a sided-cap and a fur-cap directly before the German invasion in 1941.

"S chego nachinaetsia Rodina?"

"My Moscow"

It is a very good song. Now it is the hymn of Moscow but some phrases of the modern song differ from the war-time version.

Here is the old original version.

"My Moscow"

(Translated by Andrey)

I was in the many parts of the world,
I lived in an earth-house, in trenches, in the taiga,
I was buried alive twice [1],
I knew separation, I loved with yearning.
But I am accustomed to be proud by Moscow always,
And I repeat everywhere the words,
”My dear capital,
My golden Moscow!”

I love some groves near Moscow
And some bridges over your river.
I love your Red Square
And striking of the Kremlin chiming clock.
People will not stop to speak about you
In cities and far villages,
My dear capital,
My golden Moscow!

We shall remember the harsh autumn,
The grinding sound of tanks and the reflection of bayonets [2]
And your 28 bravest sons
Will live forever in our hearts. [3]
And an enemy will never see
That your head will incline [4],
My dear capital,
My golden Moscow!

There are the banners of glory over Moscow,
People celebrate victory.
Hello, city of the Great Power
Where our dear Stalin lives.
We shall be eternally proud of you,
Your glory will live for centuries,
My dear capital,
My golden Moscow!

1941-42

Remarks of Andrey:
[1] it is about some mistakes during war –
- Sometimes the Army made mistake and sent the relatives of a soldier or of an officer the notification that he is killed in action
- Sometimes heavy wounded soldiers were considered dead and were buried alive but for some reason survived (became to move in the last moment, scrambled out from rather a shallow communal grave and so on)
[2] It is about the battle of Moscow in 1941
[3] it is about the famous in Russia feat of 28 infantrymen of the 316th Rifle Division of General Panfilov. These soldiers had the heavy combat against the German tanks near the village Dubosekovo, most part of these guys died. According some modern researches it was a myth, in reality the amount of soldiers in that place was much more than 28. But it became the symbol of bravery, the symbol of the soldiers who die but do not retreat.
[4]"Your head will incline" means "You will surrender" here

"Moia Moskva"

Ia po svetu nemalo khazhival,
Zhil v zemlianke, v okopakh, v taige,
Pokhoronen byl dvazhdy zazhivo,
Znal razluku, liubil v toske.
No vezde ia privyk gordit'sia,
I vezde povtoriaiu slova:
- Dorogaia moia stolitsa,
Zolotaia moia Moskva!

Ia liubliu podmoskovnye roshchi
I mosty nad tvoeiu rekoi.
Ia liubliu tvoiu Krasnuiu ploshchad'
I kremliovskikh kurantov boi.
V gorodakh i dalekikh stanitsakh
O tebe ne umolknet molva,
Dorogaia moia stolitsa,
Zolotaia moia Moskva!

My zapomnim surovuiu osen',
Skrezhet tankov i otblesk shtykov,
I v serdtsakh budut zhit' dvadtsat' vosem'
Samykh khrabrykh tvoikh synov.
I vragu nikogda ne dobit'sia,
Chtob sklonilas' tvoia golova,
Dorogaia moia stolitsa,

Nad Moskvoiu znamena slavy,
Torzhestvuet pobedu narod.
Zdravstvui gorod Velikoi Derzhavy,

"Small light"

(Translated by Andrey)

It is soldier's very famous and popular Soviet WWII-time song.

"Small light"

A girl saw off a soldier
Who had to go in a frontline position.
She said him goodbye
On the footsteps of a porch at the dark night.
And all the time when her fellow could see
Her house through a fog
A small light shined
In girl's window.

Guy was met by glorious
Front collective.
Comrades were everywhere,
Friends were everywhere.
But he couldn't forget
The known street:
Where are you, my beloved girl?
Where are you, my small light?

And the girl sent a message from far away
To the fellow.
She wrote that her love
Will never die,
That everything what they decided earlier to do
Will be fulfilled, -
The golden small light
Will not go out. [1]

And it became gaily
At heart of the soldier
As a result of so a good
Letter from her.
And fellow fights more hardly
The hateful enemy
For the Soviet Motherland,
For the dear small light.

For the Soviet Motherland,
For the dear small light.

1942

Remarks of Andrey:
[1] it is about "light of love" here

"Ogoniok"

Na pozitsiiu devushka
Provozhala boitsa.
Tiomnoi noch'iu prostilasia
Na stupen'kakh kryl'tsa.
I poka za tumanami
Videt' mog pareniok,
Na okoshke na devich'em
Vsio gorel ogoniok.

Parnia vstretila slavnaia
Frontovaia sem'ia,
Vsiudu byli tovarishchi,
Vsiudu byli druz'ia.
No znakomuiu ulitsu
Pozabyt' on ne mog:
Gde zh ty, devushka milaia?
Gde zh ty, moi ogoniok?

I podruga dalekaia
Parniu vestochku shliot,
Chto liubov' eio devich'ia
Nikogda ne umret;
Vse, chto bylo zadumano,
V svoi ispolnitsia srok,-
Ne pogasnet bez vremeni
Zolotoi ogoniok.

I stanovitsia radostno
Na dushe u boitsa
Ot takogo khoroshego
Ot eio pis'metsa.
I vraga nenavistnogo
Krepche b'iot parenek
Za Sovetskuiu Rodinu,
Za rodnoi ogoniok.

Za Sovetskuiu Rodinu,
Za rodnoi ogoniok.
