"The White Army, the Black baron"

It is a well known song of the Civil War time.

"White Army, Black Baron"

(Translated by Andrey)

The White Army and the Black Baron [1]
Are preparing Tsar's throne [2] for us again.
But Red Army is the strongest army
In all the territory from the taiga to the British seas [3].

Refrain (2 times):
So let Red Army men
Will compress imperiously
Their bayonets with their horny arms. [4]
And all we have to go
Irrepressibly in our last mortal combat!

Red Army, go forward, go forward!
RevVoenSovet [5] calls us in a combat.
You know that Red Army is the strongest army
In all the territory from the taiga to the British seas.

Repeat refrain (2 times):

The White Army and the Black Baron
Are preparing Tsar's throne for us again.
But Red Army is the strongest army
In all the territory from the taiga to the British seas.

Repeat refrain (2 times):

1918 (in other sources - 1920)

Remarks of Andrey
[1] - "Whites" - anti-Communist Forces, "Black Baron" - hmm, nevertheless I suppose that it is a version of 1920. White Forces in the south of Russia were under command of Baron Vrangel', some elite White regiments had a black uniform in 1920. And I suppose it is the reason of the term "Black Baron".
[2] - it means "want to return Monarchy" here
[3] - "the British Seas" means "seas nearly Britain" here, "the taiga" means "Russian Far East and Eastern Siberia".
[4] "with their horny arms" - it means that Red Army consists of workers and peasants who usually have horny arms
[5] "RevVoenSovet" is the abbreviation of the term"Revolutionary Military Council", sometimes it was called very shortly "RVS".
All the units from an Army scale and higher were under command of not a commander but of the "RevVoenSovet" which consisted usually of the commander of a unit, of the commissar of a unit, of the chief of staff of a unit and, may be, of some other people. ]
So, for an example, it was possible to read that "the RevVoenSovet of the 6th Army ordered ..." or "This order was signed by the RVS of the Western Front"

"Belaia Armiia, Chiornyi Baron"

Belaia armiia, Chiornyi baron
Snova gotoviat nam tsarskii tron,
No ot taigi do britanskikh morei
Krasnaia Armiia vsekh sil'nei.

Pripev (2 raza ):
Tak pust' zhe Krasnaia
Szhimaet vlastno
Svoi shtyk mozolistoi rukoi,
I vse dolzhny my
Neuderzhimo
Idti v poslednii smertnyi boi!

Krasnaia Armiia, marsh, marsh vperiod!
Revvoensovet nas v boi zoviot.
Ved' ot taigi do britanskikh morei
Krasnaia Armiia vsekh sil'nei!

Pripev (2 raza ).

Belaia armiia, Chiornyi baron
Snova gotoviat nam tsarskii tron,
No ot taigi do britanskikh morei
Krasnaia Armiia vsekh sil'nei.

Pripev (2 raza ):

"Song of Horse Army men"

It is a very famous song which was popular in 30th years.

"Song of Horse Army men"

(Translated by Andrey)

It was combat Eighteenth year.[1]
It was time
Of struggle and alarms.
Our preparing to a march was not long -
We raised horses from Kuban' to Volga [2]
For campaign.
Chorus:
Our preparing to a march was not long -
We raised horses from Kuban' to Volga
For a campaign.

We with Budennyy [3] rode at a trot
Between hot and dust
In great actions.
Our loud glory went
Through humpbacked barrows
And through river rifts.
Chorus:
Our loud glory went
Through humpbacked barrows
And through river rifts.

White bones molder
In Don and Zamost'e, [4]
Winds are noisy over the bones.
Dogs-atamans [5] remember,
Polish pans [6] remember
Our the might of the sabres of our Horse Army.
Chorus:
Dogs-atamans remember,
Polish pans remember
Our the might of the sabres of our Horse Army.

Chorus:
If new wars will come
In our calm land
Like machinegun downpour,
So we shall ride on our battle horses
Along known roads
After dear NarCom [7].
So we shall ride on our battle horses
Along known roads
After dear NarCom.

It was combat Eighteenth year.
It was time
Of struggle and alarms.
Our preparing to a march was not long -
We raised horses from Kuban' to Volga
For a campaign.
Chorus:
Our preparing to a march was not long -
We raised horses from Kuban' to Volga
For a campaign.

1935

Remarks of Andrey:
[1] – the Russian Civil War between Reds and Whites has began in 1918.
[2] – “Don” means region nearly the Don River, “Kuban'” is a region of Russia to the North West from the Caucasus
[3] Budennyy was the famous commander of the famous 1st Horse Army. The 1st Horse Army was a legendary Cavalry formation of Reds of Civil War time .
[4] Don is the famous place where Cossacks live, most part of the Cossacks supported Whites so it was place of large combats between Reds and Whites. Zamost'e is place in the West of Byelorussia where combats between Reds and Polish troops occurred.
[5] "dogs-atamans"… If to speak simply so the Cossack's general was called "ataman", the Cossacks fought in White troops against Communists. Large combats between Red Cavalry including the 1st Horse Army and the Cossack White Cavalry were in the regions of southern Russia. In the end Reds won as a result of the supremacy in the amount of troops. "Dogs-atamans remember" means that Cossack White Leaders remember how Red Cavalry beated them.
[6] "Polish pans"… Polish landlords were called "pans". It is about events of the Soviet-Polish war of 1919-20 when Red Cavalry including the 1st Horse Army firstly advanced successfully and repelled Polish troops from Russian territory to the Vistula River.
[7] NarCom is abbreviation from "Narodnyy Comissar" ("People Commisar"). All the ministers in USSR were called "People Commisar" in 30th years. It is about Voroshilov here, he was one of the leaders of the 1st Horse Army during the Civil War, in 30th years he was the NarCom of the Defence of USSR.

It is a very famous pre-revolutionary song.

Hmm… About details

It is dashing revolutionary sailor’s song.

As I know it had many couplets-chastooshkas (verses which were made by ordinary people). (I heard in it in famous movie “Dog’s heart”).

Usually such couplets began with rows:

“Eh, apple,
And you are on the plate…”

“Эх, яблочко,
Да на тарелочке…”

“Evening in the roadstead”

It is sailor’s famous song of WWII time.

“Evening in the roadstead”

(Translated by Andrey)

Let’s sing, friends, we shall go in a campaign tomorrow
During the fog, which will be before the dawn.
Let’s sing more merry, let our gray-haired battle-tried captain
Will join us in the singing.

Refrain:
Good bye, dear city,
We shall go in a sea tomorrow.
And it will be early time of a day
When a known pale blue kerchief
Will appear for a moment behind the stern.

And evening is such pretty again
That it is impossible to not sing songs.
Let’s sing, friends, more harmoniously
About intimate friendship, about a navy service.

Repeat refrain.

It became silent on the large roadstead,
A fog enveloped a sea.
And a wave is kissing the dear coast,
And only a bayan [1] is playing quietly:

Repeat refrain.

1942

Remarks of Andrey:
[1] bayan is a type of an accordion

“There is only moment”

It is the song of the 70th years from the movie “Sannikov's Land”. I heard that this song was a favorite song of the Russian officers in the Chechen War.

“There is only a moment”

(Translated by Andrey)

Everything is ghostly in this blustery World
There is only a moment so hold on to it.
There is only a moment between past and future
And exactly this moment is called a life.

It is unlikely that eternal peace will gladden a heart,
Eternal peace is for gray-haired cairns.
But there only a moment – a dazzling moment,-
For the star which is falling.

Let this World will rush far through centuries
But our ways are not always on the way with it.
And I value and run risk with only one thing in the World,
This thing is one moment, only one moment.

Everyone will have and happiness, and misfortune in the life,
There is only a moment so hold on to it.
There is only a moment between past and future
And exactly this moment is called a life.

"Est' tol'ko mig"

Prizrachno vsio v etom mire bushuiushchem.

Est' tol'ko mig mezhdu proshlym i budushchim.

Vechnyi pokoi serdtse vriad li obraduet.
Vechnyi pokoi dlia sedykh piramid
A dlia zvezdy, chto sobralas' i padaet
Est' tol'ko mig - oslepitel'nyi mig.

Pust' etot mir vdal' letit skvoz' stoletiia.

Est' tol'ko mig mezhdu proshlym i budushchim.

“The Sun Have Hidden Itself behind a Mountain”

It is a famous march song of the Soviet soldiers, it was made in the some first years after the war.

“The Sun Have Hidden Itself behind a Mountain”

(Translated by Andrey)

The sun had hidden itself behind a mountain,
A fog had covered river’s rifts,
And some Soviet soldiers were going home from the war
Along a steppe road…
And some Soviet soldiers were going home from the war
Along a steppe road…

The shoulders parts of their of soldier’s blouses had faded
From heat, from much sultriness,
The soldiers shielded with their hearts
Their combat banner from the enemies,
The soldiers shielded with their hearts
Their combat banner from the enemies…

Protecting the paternal land, the dear Motherland,
They weren’t sparing their lives.
They have overcame, have won a victory over all the enemies
In the battle for the saint Motherland,
They have overcame, have won a victory over all the enemies
In the battle for the saint Motherland,

The soldiers’ way to home was very long
But they will go in a campaign if it is necessary
Faithfulness to dear Stalin is leading
The soldiers through fire on feats,
Faithfulness to dear Stalin is leading
The soldiers through fire on feats,

The sun had hidden itself behind a mountain,
A fog had covered river’s rifts,
And some Soviet soldiers were going home from the war
Along a steppe road…
And some Soviet soldiers were going home from the war
Along a steppe road…

- Vladimir Vysotskii – 3539 kBt
http://www.omsketalon.ru/cherchill/YakFighter.zip

“I am a Yak-fighter plane”

Vladimir Vysotskii is a legendary singer of 70th. He was very popular in USSR, he was a real people favourite. When he died in 1980 many thousands of the ordinary Soviet people went to attend a funeral.

All the texts of Vysotskii’s songs are written by himself.

This of his songs is about a fighter plane. Vysotskii could to show the character and the stress of an aerial combat.

“I am a Yak-fighter plane”

(Translated by Andrey)

I am a Yak-fighter plane, my engine is ringing,
The sky is my home!
But the guy who sits inside of me
Supposes that he is a fighter.

I shot down a “Junkers” [1] in this combat,
I did with him everything what I wanted.
But the guy who sits inside of me
Bored me pretty!

I was shot through in the last combat,
And a mechanic sewed over the tear
But the guy who sits inside of me
Again forces me to spin

A bomb from a bomber carries
A death to an airfield,
But it looks like a stabilizer is singing:
“P-e-a-c-e [2] to your home”[3]

Here a “Messershmitt” [4] approaches to me from the rear,
And I want to go away as I am tired from wounds!
But I see that the guy who sits inside of me
Decided to make a ram attack!

What he is doing! – Here an explosion will be! –
But it is not my turn to burn on a sand -
Exceeding all the prohibitions and speed limits,
I came out from the diving!

I am a leading plane and behind of me - the devil take it! –
Where is he, my second wingman?
Oh, here he is, he began to smoke and to sing:
“P-e-a-c-e to your home”

And the guy who sits inside of my skull
Stayed alone and got into a mess!
But he misled me and began to dive
Right after the coming out from the “death loop”[5] !

He pulls the control column toward himself and overloads are twice than usual ones -
Eh, how can he suppose that he is a pilot-ace!
But I must to obey again
And it is the last time when I do it!

I shall be obedient no more, I swear in it, –
It is better to lie on a land!
Isn’t he hearing how my pulse is being furious –
The indicator of gasoline, of my blood shows a zero!

There is the limit of the patience of a machine
And my patience gave way!
But suddenly the guy who sits inside of me
Poked himself into the frontal glass by his face!

He is killed. Oh! At last! I am flying without luggage,
I am spending my last forces!
But what is happening? What is it? – I came into a deep diving
And I in no way can come out from this diving!

It is a pity that I had time to do myself only few things
But let another will be luckier!
It turned out that I also singed in the end:
“P-e-a-c-e to your home”

“Peace to your home”

Remarks of Andrey:
[1] - “Junkers” - the Russian nickname of German Ju87 and Ju88 bombers
[2] – the Russian “mir” equals to the English “peace”. Vysotskii sings “M-i-i-i-r” and it sounds like the sound of an engine which is working with the extreme efforts.
[3] - “Peace to your home” is the translation of the Eastern welcome “Saliam aleikum”, the Muslims who lived in USSR spoke this phrase when they met one to another. Vysotskii used the Russian translation of this phrase and it sounds very well, I myself suppose that it emphasizes that the Soviet pilots were peaceful guys who want to live in a peace but must to fight.
[4] - “Messershmitt” – the Russian nickname of a German Bf109 fighter
[5] - “death loop” – a figure of the aerobatics

“Stole-stole”

It is one more satirical song of WWII time where the Russians scoff at the Germans. It is a very cheerful song.

“Stole-stole”

(Translated by Andrey)

Every one of you, of course, knows a popular movie
Where three main heroes are three ninnies [1].
The main hero is merry and pretty
And sings a funny couplet on the following motive:

(Sings a couplet on English)

Our friendly collective decided now
That we have to repeat such an example.
Our hero, a gallant cavalier, is not worse than that one,
And he sings the song in the same manner:

“They stole-stole-stole poultry and hens, gooses and cattle,
They stole-stole-stole everything that fell into their hands,
They stole-stole-stole and carried everything into their bunker –
They carried samovars-vars-vars, wide trousers-sers-sers and all the other goods exactly in their mouths” [2]

The Fuhrer [3] boasted at a summer: “I want Blitzkrieg”
He said that he would conquer in a flash Soviet Union up to the Ural,
He said that he would race past Russia like Napoleon [4] for a few attacks,
But our battalions answered so:

“We beated-beated-beated them and in Tuesday, and in Thursday [5],
And we bombed-bombed-bombed and Berlin, and Kenigsburg [6]
We beated-beated-beated them and didn’t capture them alive,
And how we bombed-bombed-bombed, and how we beated-beated-beated so we are beating-beating-beating them now and we shall beat them completely. ”

Such examples are not infrequent,
We do not forget that our ancestry won the Germans in past
And they did it not once, and not twice! [7]
Even Bismarck spoke publicly not once:
“It is possible to fight against anyone but only not against the Russians” [8]

They had-had-had no to levy war against us
And to poke their mugs-snouts
In our vegetable garden [9]
They had-had-had to know and to remember in advance –
Do not come to us to beat-beat-beat us as you will be beaten-beaten-beaten by our never beaten-beaten-beaten people.

Remarks of Andrey:
[1] I do not know about what movie she sings - :-). May be, it is about “Three men and the dog in a boat ”
[2] it is related to the behavior of the German soldiers when they came in a Russian settlement. The Germans took off all what they wanted from the Russian civilians. First of all, the German soldiers took off poultry and pigs, it was a very common image of a German soldier with a hen or a goose in his hands.. But they took off EVERYTHING, often it was completely not understandable why they took off the things which were absolutely non-useful to them. They operated like a band of robbers.
[3] Fuhrer – it sounds comically for a Russian ear
[4] Napoleon – in 1812 the Napoleon’s French troops invaded in Russia. The Russian Army was weaker and the Russian commander decided to deviate from a decisive battle and to retreat for weakening of the enemy forces. In the result after a few combats Napoleon was nearly Moscow. In the Borodino battle (a village nearly Moscow) both the armies suffer huge casualties and Kutuzov, the Russian Commander, decided to retreat and to save the Army. So Napoleon came in Moscow but the war didn’t finish, the Russians lost their capital but didn’t surrender. Then a winter began and the French Army, suffering from partisans, frost and hunger, began to run away. In the result the most part of the French troops that invaded in Russia at summer returned at home.
The phrase “race past Russia like Napoleon for a few attacks” means that Napoleon reached Moscow after only a few combats.
[5] it means “in each day of the week” here
[6] In August of 1941 operating from the Ezel Island in the Baltic Sea a few Soviet long-range bombers of the Baltic Sea Fleet Aircraft made a few bombing missions against Berlin and Kenigsburg. The effect of these missions was a huge, the Soviet soldiers cheered up. It was the same like the raid of Doolitle in Tokyo in 1942.
[7] Some examples.
- In 1242 the forces of German knights-crusaders were defeated by Novgorod’s Russian troops under the command of Alexander Nevskii in the Chudskoe Lake. In 1941 the excellent movie “Alexander Nevskii” about those events was made in USSR and it was very popular in USSR.
- In1410 in Grunvald Battle the united forces of the Poles, Lithuanians and Russians won the decisive battle against the forces of the German knights-crusaders.
- In 1757-1762 Russia fought against Prussia of Fredrick the Great. In many battles the Russian troops won the Germans, the war was almost won, the Russians captured Berlin in 1760 but suddenly Russian Empress Elizaveta died in January of 1762 and Peter the Third, the new pro-German Russian Emperor, stopped the actions against Fredrick the Great and made a peace. Fredrick the Great was saved. There is a famous phrase of the time of that war. A German general reported to Fredrick the Great about the behavior of the Russian soldiers in the battlefield: “It is not enough to shoot a Russian soldier some times, it is not enough to beat his with a sabre some times, it is necessary also to push him with a foot and only then he will fall”.
[8] It is well-known fact in Russia that Bismarck, the great German chancellor, willed to the Germans never to fight against Russia.
[9] "to poke their mugs-snouts in our vegetable garden" - it is a Russian saying. In Russia every peasant's house has its vegetable garden. And sometimes a pig gets in the vegetable garden and began to eat plants and to root up. In the result the pig spoils a lot of plants. So "do not poke your mug-snout in my vegetable garden" means "do not come to me as you will spoil my property and I shall use force against you if you will come nevertheless"

Here is the addition about the history of the making of a few songs.

1. “Our Cossacks are riding along Berlin”

Tsesar' Solodar', a poet, was in Berlin during the Keitel's signing of the Act of the unconditional
surrender. Early at morning of May, 9th he saw an episode in a Berlin road and the episode impressed him (the episode described in the song). And he couldn't forget it. He flew in Moscow by plane in the same morning and he began to write the words of the future song still in the plane.

At afternoon of that day he showed his poem to brothers Pokrass, the famous composers. They liked the poem.

And already at the evening of that day one of the brothers called to Solodar' and invited him to listen the new song based on his poem.

Soon all the country knew the song which was made on May, 9th of 1945 (it is the Victory Day in USSR/Russia). It was the last song of the Great Patriotic War.

2. “The Fond Stone”

In 1943 Boris Mokrousov, a composer, who was in Sevastopol' in 1941 and who was familiar with a lot of Sevastopol's seamen, read in 1943 the article "The Sevastopol's Stone" in the newspaper "The Red Fleet".

In the last hours of the Sevastopol defense the German artillery fired embankment of Sevastopol in the region of monument "To the lost ships". One of the last defenders of Sevastopol, a seaman, picked up a small granite stone which was cut of from the parapet by an enemy shell. And the retreating seaman swore to return and to bring the stone back in Sevastopol.

Later seaman got a mortal wound and passed the stone to his friends when he was dying. He said: "You must to return the stone in its homeland - in Sevastopol."

A soldier-sniper, who took the stone, was killed in an ambush but he had time to pass the stone to his friend-scout. Later the stone was passed to a signaler, then - to an artilleryman, then - to a machinegunner and so on. And everywhere the stone was in the reliable hands of the men who swore to carry out the legacy of an unknown seaman.

Mokrousov was impressed by the legend about "the Sevasopol's stone", which was spoken in the article of Leonid Sobolev, and began to make the song about it. And the song became the great....

And the legend about "the Sevastopol's stone" was not only a legend. Retreating from Sevastopol according the order of the Command, many Soviet defenders of Sevastopol took a hollow of the hand of the Sevastopol's land or a piece of Sevastopol's granite and swore to return it back, to return in Sevastopol with a victory.

And they did it in 1944.

3. “A Bryansk forest was severely noisy”

In the autumn of 1942 the partisans of Briansk region sent a radiogram to the Command of the Briansk Front where they said that they had enough weapon but had no a song. They asked to send them a song as it is impossible to capture a song from an enemy like weapon.

And the Political Department of the Briansk Front asked poet Anatolii Safronov and composer Sigizmund Kats to make the song for the partisans of Briansk region.

The song was made quickly. And suddenly Kats and Safronov got the order to move in the Front headquarters to help to prepare the song to the holiday - Anniversary of the October Revolution.

In the headquarters poet Safronov got an offer to visit by air the partisans in the holiday. A plane with the ammo, medicaments, food was ready to fly to partisans. And it was the order "to load" in the plane the song also. It was not easy because the poet had no printed music and it was impossible to take the composer as it was only one passenger's place in the plane. Before the departure Kats singed to Safronov for many times the melody of the song, he entreated Safronov to not forget the melody...

The plane successfully crossed a frontline and landed in the partisan region in the enemy territory in the frozen Smelizh Lake near the town of Trubchevsk. And in the night from 6th to 7th of November of 1942 in the holiday evening in the earth-house dug in a semi-burnt village, A.P. Matveed, the chief of the Briansk staff of united partisan detachments, declared: "Here is poet Safronov, he is a correspondent but also he brought to us the song which was specially made for Briansk's partisans".

The poet recalled: "I singed my songs many times but I never was so excited as in that time... I singed the song and the public asked me to repeat it. So I had to repeat the song again and again. And then I was embraced by the people..."

At morning a blind bayan-player studied orally the melody of the song and the song became to spread from a one earth-house to another.

So the premiere of the song occurred in the Anniversary of the October Revolution in the partisan region begirt from all the sides by enemies.

4. “Farewell, rocky mountains”

Rybachii is a peninsula nearly Murmansk. From the first days of the war the defenders of Rybachii were cut off from the mainland. They were surrounded by the Barents Sea from three sides and by the Germans from the fourth side. The valiant garrison of Rybachii fought against the Germans almost for 40 months in such conditions! The Soviet seamen called Rybachii "the granite battleship".

Hitler demanded to capture at least the part of Rybachii at any price. But the firmness and the bravery of the defenders of Rybachii didn't let for the Germans to do it. It was from the rocky mountains of Rybachii from where the Soviet Marines went in the raids against the enemy coast. Nikolai Bukin, an ordinary Marine, was a crewman of "the granite battleship". He wrote the poem which soon became the very popular song of the Soviet military seamen. And it was the very popular song of not only seamen but of the other Soviet soldiers also.

Admiral Golovko, the commander of the Soviet North Sea Fleet during WWII, recalled that when a British admiral visited his headquarters the dinner for the honour of the visitors was organized and the first song which was singed in the dinner was “Farewell, rocky mountains

“The war took away the soldiers”

It is the second good song from the post-WWII movie “Na voine kak na voine” (“At war is at war”) - the first, very famous song from this movie is "Tanks Were Rattling in a Field" ("Na pole tanki grokhotali").

This movie is a about a few days of the life of the crew of a Soviet self-propelled gun in the summer offensive of 1943.

The melody of the song is a very sad.

And I am not sure that the Westerners will understand the meaning of the song so I’ll try to explain it (see the bottom).

“The war took away the soldiers” [1]

(Translated by Andrey)

The fields are pitted,
They look in the sky with abandoned look.
It is for a few last years
When a soldier was not at his home!

But somewhere a spring in his homeland is waiting for him,
And the talks of his homeland’s birds are waiting for him [2].
But the war took him away;
It took him away very far, beyond many forests and mountains…

Why did you, war, turn a rye field
Into a battlefield?
The land is burnt by a fire,
The each plot of the land was wounded severely!

The land was ploughed for many days
Only by tanks and shells.
And only wormwood and goose-foot [3]
Came up on the land…

The land became permeated with the smell of powder,
The land forgot the smell of corn.
But it wants a warm rain
And a blue clear sky [4]!

And the land wants the Russian soldiers
To return from the far land to their homeland’s sunsets.
It wants all the Russian soldiers
To return at home from the war…

Remarks of Andrey:
[1] “The war took away the soldiers” – it means here “the ordinary peaceful people – the peasants - went on the war as soldiers”
[2]
“But somewhere a spring in his homeland is waiting for him,
And the talks of his homeland’s birds are waiting for him.”
It means “a soldier went in the war and when he will return at home he will see again a beautiful spring in the homeland and will hear how his homeland’s birds sing.”
[3] “wormwood and goose-foot” mean “weeds” here
[4] “a warm rain and a blue clear sky” is an excellent weather for growing of corn.

The explanation of the meaning of the song:
The peasants went on the war as soldiers and no one cultivates the land which turned into a battlefield. The soldiers are very far, in far land and their home land is waiting for them. The destination of the land is to produce corn, to make the peaceful production and not to be a battlefield. The land is tired from the war; the land is wounded severely by the war and is waiting for a peaceful life. The land hopes that all the soldiers will return from the war and a usual peaceful life will begin again.

I actually consider to be one of the greatest songs written about the war, very powerful when he sings it with an orchestra.

WE TURN THE WORLD *
From the frontier we made the earth turn in reverse
(That was at the beginning)
But our Battalion commander corrected its course
As his boot sent the Urals spinning.

At last we were given the word to attack,
To retake every inch that we prized so -
But we never forgot how the sun, turning back,
Almost sank on the Eastern horizon.
With our feet our advance we don't measure,
Nor vainly the flowers do we crush.
With our boots we apply all our pressure,
And we push! And we push!

In the wind from the east the stacked hay is laid low
And the sheep huddle up to the rocks as,
Without using a fulcrum, directing the blow,
We turn the earth round on its axis.

Have no fear when the sun fails to set in the West,
For Doomsday's a tale for the old ones.
The earth's just rotated wherever is best
At the will of our marching battalions.

We cling to the low hills for protection -
Hating this evil so much.
We press down on the earth, our knees flexing,
And we push! And we push!

In this place shall you find not one soldier alive,
Ready to hand himself over.
But the corpses are useful to those who survive.
To the living the dead offer cover.

Will this stupid lead finish us all off at once,
From the rear, or point-blank find its bullet?
Ahead someone's stormed an emplacement for guns,
And the earth has stood still for a minute.

My footsteps I've left with my fellows -
I mourn for each poor fallen soul.
I turn the earth's sphere with my elbows -
And I pull! And I pull!

A soldier stands up, and then instantly falls,
Got by a slug in the gizzard.
But westward, still westward our company crawls
To make sure that the sun rises eastward.

We crawl through the mud ignoring the stench
With which the dank marsh is infested.
The sun from its usual path does not flinch,
For we've burst through the battle-lines westward.

Like wedding guests, fresh dews we sample
Careless whether our limbs are still whole.
Our teeth take the earth by the stubble,
And we push! And we pull!

He didn't return from the fight
Russian title: On ne vernulsya iz boya
Why has everything changed? Everything is the same:
The sky is still shedding blue light
The same forrest, same air, same water, same rain
Only he is not back from the fight.

Now I'll never find out who was right among us
In our disputes, without respite.
Only now I find I miss him because
He didn't return from the fight.

He was awkwardly quite, out of turn he would hum
And he missed all the points outright
He would not let me sleep, he was up with the sun
Yesterday he was lost in the fight

That its empty - that's not what this is about
There is a TWO that is missing from sight
And it feels as if wind had my fire blown out
When he didn't return from the fight

Burtsing out, as if from captivity, Spring
By mistake I call out for a light
"Friend, a smoke" but only the wind answering
Yesterday he was lost in the fight

Our dead will not leave us in fires to bake
Our fallen - like gurdians defend
And the forest reflecting the sky, like a lake
And the trees radiating blue stand

For us, space in the bunker was plenty enough
And together we watched time's flight
Now it's all just for one, but it feels like a bluff
Feels like I really died in the fight.

ON NE VERNULSYa IZ BOYa

Pochemu vse ne tak? Vrode vse kak vsegda:
To zhe nebo - opyat' goluboe,
Tot zhe les, tot zhe vozduh i ta zhe voda,

V nashih sporah bez sna i pokoya.
Mne ne stalo hvatat' ego tol'ko seichas,
Kogda on ne vernulsya iz boya.

On molchal nevpopad i ne v takt podpeval,
On vsegda govoril pro drugoe,
On mne spat' ne daval, on s voshodom vstaval,
A vchera ne vernulsya iz boya.

To, chto pusto teper', - ne pro to razgovor,
Vdrug zametil ya - nas bylo dvoe.
Dlya menya budto vetrom zadulo koster,
Kogda on ne vernulsya iz boya.

Nynche vyrvalas', budto iz plena, vesna,
Po oshibke okliknul ego ya:
- Drug, ostav' pokurit'! - A v otvet - tishina:
On vchera ne vernulsya iz boya.

Nashi mertvye nas ne ostavyat v bede,
Nashi pavshie - kak chasovye.
Otrazhaetsya nebo v lesu, kak v vode,
I derev'ya stoyat golubye.

Nam i mesta v zemlyanke hvatalo vpolne,
Nam i vremya teklo dlya oboih.
Vse teper' odnomu. Tol'ko kazhetsya mne,
Eto ya ne vernulsya iz boya.

"Let's swap without looking"

It is the second popular song from the famous movie "Shchit i mech" ("A shield and a sword") about a Soviet spy in the Third Reich in 1940-45. (President Putin decided to become an Intelligence officer after he watched this movie.)

"Let's swap without looking" [1]

(Translated by Andrey)

A spot of a searchlight's spot is slowly moving on a hillock
And the night seems darker to us because of that.
It is for a few months while I didn't take off my soldier's blouse,
It is for a few months while I didn't unbuckle my belt,
I have a case from a shell,
I have some fragrant home-grown tobacco in my embroidered pouch,
It is not useful for a soldier to have superfluous paraphernalia
So let's swap without looking like we, frontline soldiers, speak.

A soldier keeps a letter from his mother and a hollow of the hand of homeland soil
In a pocket of his weather-stained greatcoat.
We didn't spare anything for the Victory,
We even didn't spare our hearts as a reserve stock.
What have I to wish you before a combat?
You know that we go in a fire and smoke not for awards.
Let's, brother-soldier, swap our fates.
Let's swap without looking like we, frontline soldiers, speak.

We have learned to go under fire without stooping,
We have learned to leave chance habitation without grieving.
So it is why we have to drink for you, our dear Guards Corps,
A hundred grams "and a trailer" of alcohol. [2]
While some black clouds still are over land [3]
We know no rest and our ought doesn't let us to return home.
So what can we swap with you, brother-soldier?
Let's swap without looking like we, frontline soldiers, speak.

So what can we swap with you, brother-soldier?
Let's swap without looking like we, frontline soldiers, speak.

Remarks of Andrey:

[1] - "to swap without looking" was a custom, it was a type of a game (I remember that it was popular when I was in a kindergarten in 70th). It is when two persons have an inexpensive small thing in their hands (the hands are behind of them and they don?t know what is in the hand of the opponent). They agree "to swap without looking" and swap the things which they have in their hands.
[2] - "A hundred grams "and a trailer" means "A hundred grams "and a little more", "a little more" is called "a thrailer" in Russian slang if it is about alcohol.
[3] - "While some black clouds still are over land" - It means "while the situation is dangerous, while enemy still threatens to us"

Original Russian version:

"Makhniom ne gliadia"

Prozhektor sharit po prigorku ostorozhno,
I noch' ot etogo nam kazhetsia temnei.
Kotoryi mesiats ne snimal ia gimnastiorku,

Soldat khranit v karmane vytsvetshei shineli

"Volunteers - members of the Komsomol"

It is an excellent song from the popular Soviet movie of "Komsomol'tsy" ("Members of Komsomol").

Komsomol - Kommunisticheskii Soiuz Molodiozhi ("Communist Union of Youth")

"Volunteers - members of the Komsomol"

(Translated by Andrey)

It is pleasant to hear a nightingale
Singing at dawn over the Moscow-River [1].
But we prefer to live not in rest, [2]
We are children of harsh time.

Refrain:
Volunteers - members of the Komsomol,
We are strong with our faithful friendship.
We are able to go through flame to open new young ways
If it is necessary.
Volunteers - members of the Komsomol,
We have selflessly to believe and to love,
To look on the sun at dawn [3]-
It is alone way to find happiness.

Rise in sky height!
Go down deep into the Earth! [4]
We were born in time,
And wherever we are and wherever we shall be Russia is and will be together with us.

Repeat refrain.

There is no better life style than our life style -
We'll experience everything that is on Earth
To hear a nightingale
Singing at dawn in our homeland, over our homeland?s river.

Repeat refrain (2 times).

Remarks of Andrey:
[1] - the Moscow-River - a river in Moscow
[2] - "to live not in rest" - it means "to not be a Philistine", "to be active"
[3] "Rise in sky height!
Go down deep into the Earth!" - it means explore the world, be active in your life, all the ways are opened before you, you can become a researcher and you are able to penetrate in the sky and in the depth.

"Komsomol'tsy-dobrovol'tsy"

Khorosho nad Moskvoiu-rekoi
Uslykhat' solov'ia na rassvete.
Tol'ko nam po dushe nepokoi -
My surovogo vremeni deti.

Pripev:
Komsomol'tsy-dobrovol'tsy,
My sil'ny nashei vernoiu druzhboi.
Skvoz' ogon' my proidiom, esli nuzhno,-
Otkryvat' molodye puti.
Komsomol'tsy-dobrovol'tsy,
Nado verit'-liubit' bezzavetno,
Videt' solntse poroi predrassvetnoi,-
Tol'ko tak mozhno schast'e naiti.

Podnimaisia v nebesnuiu vys'!
Opuskaisia v glubiny zemnye!
Ochen' vovremia my rodilis' -
Gde b my ni byli, s nami Rossiia!

Pripev.

Luchshe netu dorogi takoi -
Vsio, chto est', ispytaem na svete,
Chtoby doma nad nashei rekoi
Uslykhat' solov'ia na rassvete.

Pripev (2 raza ).
